Hubdoc vs Dext in 2026: cheap and simple against deep and quote-priced
One of these has a price on its website and one makes you ask. That tells you most of what you need to know about who each is built for.
Checked on the vendors' own pages on July 23, 2026: hubdoc.com/pricing sells Hubdoc at $12 USD a month with a 30-day trial, and Xero's product-ideas forum calls Hubdoc "a core part of our offering." Dext gates its pricing behind a quote. So the comparison is a cheap simple capture pipe against a deep, firm-shaped extraction suite.

What Hubdoc is good at
Hubdoc earns its $12 by being cheap, flat, and simple enough to hand straight to a client: email it in, snap it on a phone, upload from the desktop. It publishes clean header-level data to Xero and QBO. The limits are real too. No line-item depth, an interface that shows its age, and Xero's own capture page now leads with the free in-Xero Smart Document Capture. As a capture pipe for a small practice, though, cheap and simple and good enough is still the pitch, and it still lands.
What Dext is (and isn't)
Dext reads deeper. On the higher tiers it pulls every line off an invoice instead of just the total, it learns your suppliers so the same vendor stops needing the same correction, and it gives you one dashboard across all your clients. It is genuinely more capable than Hubdoc. It is also built and priced for accounting firms, and as of July 2026 the pricing is quote-gated, with the public page unavailable when we checked, so insist on a real number for your own volume. What practitioners complain about: the tier pricing gets fidgety, the interface is heavier than a small practice wants, and you still read behind the OCR.
Choose Dext if you process high volume, bill for it, and need line items. Stay on Hubdoc if header-level capture into Xero or QBO at $12 covers what you actually do. The upgrade buys depth, not simplicity.
What neither one does
Both deal with what clients send. Neither knows what a client hasn't sent, and neither goes and asks. Which of my 20 clients still owes me statements, and who is nagging them, is not a capture question, and no capture tool answers it. Sorted Receipts is built for that half of the job. It knows what's missing, it asks for it in your name until your cutoff, and what comes back lands filed instead of in a pile. At month-end you get a list to tick off and a folder of originals named so you can find them again in a year. $8/mo flat, alongside whichever capture tool you keep.
