Hubdoc vs Dext in 2026: one of them no longer exists
If you're comparing Hubdoc and Dext today, the comparison is already decided: Xero retired Hubdoc on May 8, 2026. Auto-fetch, OCR, and publishing rules were switched off; existing documents moved to storage-only Xero Files. So the real question isn't "which is better" — it's whether Dext is the right place for a Hubdoc practice to land. Often it is. Often it isn't.

What Hubdoc actually did for you
Strip away nostalgia and Hubdoc earned its place with three things: it was free with Xero, it was simple enough to give clients, and it pulled statements automatically from banks and supplier portals. It never did line items well, its OCR was dated, and Xero had stopped investing in it years before the retirement. But for a small practice, "free, simple, good enough" was the whole pitch — and it's exactly the combination none of the official replacements kept.
What Dext is (and isn't)
Dext is the professional extraction suite: deep data capture, line items on higher tiers, supplier rules, multi-client dashboards, integrations both ways. It is genuinely more capable than Hubdoc ever was. It is also priced and shaped for accounting firms — plans start around $34/mo and the cost climbs through tiers and credits as volume and line-item extraction come in. The recurring practitioner complaints are the fidgety tier pricing, an interface heavier than a small practice wants, and OCR that still needs review.
Dext is the right migration if you process high document volumes, bill for it, and want extraction depth. It's the wrong one if what you actually used Hubdoc for was "clients put documents somewhere, I get them organized" — you'd be paying firm-suite prices for a collection problem.
