Five tools actually chase clients for documents. Most roundups on this search compare capture tools that never chase anybody, which is why they all sound the same.

One job is being compared here: getting documents out of a client's hands without you writing the reminder emails. Not pulling data off documents that already arrived. That's capture, it's Hubdoc, Dext, AutoEntry and Xero's built-in scanner, and it's a different page (our category map).

The honest differences
ReceiptNudge: pure chasing, taken seriously
Chasing and nothing else. You upload a CSV of unmatched transactions from your bookkeeping software and it runs an escalating email and SMS sequence in your firm's name, with magic-link uploads and a live dashboard. Their own site says it plainly: not a scanner, not document storage. So if your filing system already works and you only want the nagging automated, it's a credible pick. £39/mo flat is the most expensive entry point on this page, and everything the client sends still lands back in your folders for you to file.
Intake: checklist collection, cheap at volume
Free up to 10 clients, then $19/mo unlimited, which is the best price per client here. It collects against checklists you write (send November statements, fill in this W-9, sign this), classifies what arrives, and gives clients a branded portal. What it can't know is what's missing against the books. The requests are checklist-driven, so a transaction sitting there with no receipt is invisible to it.
DocuChase: recurring requests, built for solo QBO
It runs the monthly ask for you. You write the request once, it goes out every month as a link the client can open without a password, and it nudges them on day 3, 7 and 14. You get a screen showing who's overdue, who's stalled and who's fine, you approve or bounce what turns up, and it drops into Google Drive. Shaped for a solo QBO bookkeeper, priced on founding tiers ($0/$14/$29/$59) it says are locked for good. Same limit as Intake: it chases the request, not the gap. It knows a client hasn't replied. It doesn't know the Shell charge on March 14 has no receipt.
Hubdoc: the capture layer, here for contrast
Hubdoc doesn't chase. It's on the list to keep the category boundary honest. At $12/mo it captures what clients send by email, app or desktop and publishes the extracted data to Xero and QBO. Several tools on this page, ours included, are built to run alongside it rather than instead of it.
Sorted Receipts: chase, sort and close in one place
Ours, so read it with that in mind. Every client gets a link, nothing to log into, and what they drop on it comes back to you already in the right month under the right vendor, all your clients in one screen instead of thirty. Anything the reader isn't sure about waits in a review pile rather than going quietly into your books. When a vendor that bills every month hasn't billed, it asks the client, in your words, escalating until your cutoff. Then month-end is a list you tick off, and the export is a CSV plus the originals renamed so they're findable a year later, for QBO, Xero, Desktop or plain folders. $8/mo flat at any size, documents never counted.
Two limits worth knowing before you try it. Extraction is header-level only, so no line items. And the ledger loop, where you upload a bank CSV and get the missing-receipt list for the month, runs as a founder-operated pilot right now rather than self-serve.
